Mariah Carey married her ‘soul mate’ Nick Cannon in April, 2008. But that doesn’t mean she’ll stop lashing out at the opposite sex. In her 12th studio album, the sexy singer not only gives break-ups her top priority, she makes it seem as if it accounts for her entire life.

Lyrically, the album is surprisingly risk-taking. Mariah doesn’t go down the same beaten paths, picking more challenging routes such as comedy (‘Up Out My Face’ and ‘Betcha Gonna Know’) and mud-slinging (‘Obsessed’ and ‘Standing O’). One possible reason for this is that she’s replaced her regular set of 10 songwriters with just two – producers The-Dream and Tricky Stewart. With them, Carey has crafted what’s possibly her first true album. It sounds like the work of one person who intends on creating a fun, tongue-in-cheek album.

But – just as you expected – it’s too bad Mariah isn’t as great a songwriter as she is a singer. The music is tepid, almost throughout, and the lyrics aren’t humorous or emotionally-charged enough to create the required atmosphere for a themed album (or any album). ‘Having a Typical Emotional Upset’, for example, may cleverly (and laboriously) be reduced to ‘H.A.T.E.U.’, but its lyrics are amateurish – ‘Then you sat alone in pride / And I sat at home and cried’. The music too is beat-filled, but without the hooks.

Every song seems to have been carefully crafted, which means it’s got the ingredients and the (bad) intentions for a scathing song. Unfortunately, it’s usually just cheesy. In ‘Obsessed’ , supposedly about her relationship with Eminem, she sings, ‘You a mom and pop, I’m a corporation / I’m the press conference, you’re a conversation,’ and ‘See right through you like you’re bathin’ in Windex’. And we’ll let ‘Up Out My Face’ come as a surprise.

Only on a few occasions do the tunes actually stick. The love ballad, ‘Inseparable’, and Aretha Franklin-inspired ‘Standing O’ are two saviors. Opener ‘Betcha Gon’ Know’ is also a charming ditty, wherein Mariah introduces this as a grudge album, singing ‘Imma la la la la la laugh at you’.

Surprisingly, she mentions her soul mate only once, in the song ‘The Impossible’. Maybe she thinks that by making fun of past loves she is implying her current happiness. Maybe she is happy, but this album has convinced me more of her cheesiness than anything else.
